I was invited to design and produce the immersive theater for the “Whale Fossil Special Exhibition” at the National Museum of Natural Science. In 2022, a remarkably complete gray whale fossil was unearthed in Hengchun, southern Taiwan—an extraordinary discovery celebrated by both Taiwan’s and the international paleontological communities. To honor this unique event, our team meticulously sculpted 3D models of the gray whale’s form—both skeletal and fleshed—based on close consultation and review by several leading cetacean experts in Taiwan. The result is a scientifically accurate and aesthetically sensitive representation of this ancient gray whale (see Figures 1, 2, and 3), a creature now recognized as part of Taiwan’s deep natural history.
The narrative of the immersive video traces the whale’s journey from fossil excavation to symbolic rebirth, through environmental degradation and ecological disaster, and ultimately to a “whale fall” on the ocean floor. The concept of the life cycle underpins the entire piece, serving as a poetic metaphor for humanity’s impact on marine environments and urging reflection on the fragile relationship between humans and nature.
In terms of spatial design, we fully leveraged the existing infrastructure of the museum’s exhibition space to minimize environmental impact. The theater was reimagined as an eye-shaped immersive arena, incorporating a semicircular projection wall reused from a previous exhibition, and eight small speakers salvaged from past displays. This approach not only embodies the ecological values at the heart of the work, but also exemplifies a sustainable curatorial practice.
