Holly Dark Heaven – Project Space in ECA (2009)

Holly Dark Heaven
Wood, jewels, iron wires, LED lights, plastic bugs, dvd player (2009)

This was the Project Space during my second year of MFA at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), I designed a darkroom installation that used plastic insects and jewelry to create a ritualistic atmosphere. This work was connected to the environmental issues I read and the science fiction films I saw. Visitors can lie down and watch a screen beneath a black sculpture. The screen alternates between rapid flickering, stillness, or being turned off, with the flashing tones resembling LED lighting. LED beams on the walls illuminate black insect clusters, casting intersecting shadows on the walls. Gems are affixed between these shadows, and as visitors move through the space, they can see the sparkling reflections. My aim was to express a sense of loss within opulence, as well as death and eeriness beneath the dazzling surface.
